How to Choose the Right Business for You

At some point, we all dream of being our own boss, making our own work hours and creating a multi-million dollar business. So how do you get started? If you ever thought about starting your own business, this article will create a framework of questions to help you choose the right business for you.

Creating the right business match will determine the level of success or failure of your venture. You should start by asking yourself questions to frame what it is that you really want to be in business. Here is a list of questions to consider:

Do you want to produce goods or services, or maybe both? Some businesses produce or manufacture a product to sale while others provide a service by assisting individuals and other businesses with some type of service. Manufacturing products can take many forms and can even be outsourced once you decide what products to produce. Services include many options such as tax preparation, website design, mobile repairs and many more.

Are you qualified to operate this type of business? Some businesses require a degree or license while others may require a specific skill, talent or level of experience. Medical services typically require some form of training and license. Tax professionals must have an ability to work with numbers and be trained in the proper tax code. What specific skills will your business require?

Do you like working with people and the general public? Do you have the patience to deal with irritable customers or to focus on service excellence? Some businesses require direct customer interface while others are more indirectly consumer oriented. A bricks and mortar retail store requires face-to-face customer sales while an e-commerce store only requires indirect consumer contact.

How will you get the money to finance your business? Do you have the necessary capital to start your business? Entrepreneurs sometime under estimate how much capital is required to actually start and operate a new business when such items as marketing and advertising are required to be successful. Do you want to have a business partner(s)?

Do you want to start a part-time or full-time business? If you choose part-time, you can keep you day job and grow your part-time business until it can fully support your lifestyle. If you go all in, be prepared for slow times until you reach your volume projections.

How will your business impact your life? Are you committed to putting in the necessary time to be successful in your business? How will the change in starting your business affect your family and lifestyle? It is always best to get the full support of family and those affected by your change in personal circumstances.

Is there a market need for your business? Success is easier to attain if you have a business that is serving an unmet market need. You must determine who your competition is and how you will position your business to compete with them. Also, be careful of markets with too many competitors as it will be more difficult to compete for the same customers.

How will you create your first sale? You must determine who your target customer will be and how you can reach them with your business message. Will your business compete as a commodity business or will you be creating a new brand? Will you start your business by using guerrilla marketing tactics or prepare a comprehensive marketing plan?

As you start to work through these questions, you will develop a better feel for what type of business is best suited to you. This is not a totally complete list to address all potential individual conditions, so any additional concerns not listed should be added to your personal evaluation. You may want to use this list as the starting point of collecting data for your business plan.

Other things to consider when starting a business include being honest with yourself. You must be able to determine what you know. If you do not know how to do a business function, get help from the outside. You may want to consider building a team with specific responsibilities for each business function.

To discover the right business for you, follow your passion. If you are passionate about it, you will enjoy your business and it will lead to money. It is the passion that will direct your attitude in this scenario. The passion will drive your no-quit attitude to help you through difficult economic conditions when you have little control over consumer decisions.

Lastly, don't forget the golden rule that it is better to give than to receive. Always look for opportunities to align your business with the right cause and organizations.
