How to Choose the Right Dog Kennel

Leaving your dog behind when you go on business trips or vacations can be tough. However, it's not always practical to take him with you. When you know that you'll be gone for an extended amount of time, you can't leave your dog alone but placing him in a dog kennel is a good option. You can relax and concentrate on your trip knowing he will be safe and cared for while you're away.

Dog kennels vary in price and in accommodations so choosing the right one can often be a bit confusing but knowing what you want for your dog while you're away will help you choose the best one. Finding a dog kennel that meets the specific needs of your pet will provide you with the peace of mind you need so you won't worry about him while you're away.

When using the Internet to search for a dog kennel, boardingkennels.org explains how and why viewing photos can help you find some of the best ones to consider. After picking out two or three kennels that offer the type of services you want, the following tips can help you choose the best one between them:

Visit the dog kennels and take a tour of the facility. While you're there, observe the other dogs to see how they react. Are they happy and comfortable or do they appear to be withdrawn and scared? Are the dogs being walked and do they have access to fresh food and water? Is the facility clean and well maintained? Are the cleaning products they use safe for pets? If the kennel does not allow tours, you may want to consider another one.

Talk to the staff about feeding arrangements. Many pet owners have their dogs on a specific schedule and it can upset the dog to change it. You'll also need to know if you can bring your own food so it won't upset her diet and if you'll still be charged for the food if you're providing your own.

If your dog takes medications, find out if the kennel has a trained staff member that can and will administer them at the correct time. Keeping your pet healthy is part of their job even if it means going out of their way a bit.

Discuss what will be done and what procedures will be followed if your pet becomes ill. Will they take him to your veterinarian or is there a vet on the premises that can tend to your dog and determine how serious his condition is?

Bringing your dog's own bed and toys that she is familiar with can make her more relaxed and keep her calm at her home away from home. Check to see if the facility allows you to bring these items with your pet. Some will allow it while others will not.

If you do a lot of traveling, then finding a dog kennel that you can use on a regular basis will take a lot of stress off of you and your dog. He will feel more relaxed while you're away because he will be familiar with the staff and the scenery and you'll feel confident that he is being well cared for.
