How to Choose the Right Lighting: Controlling the Ambiance of Your Room

Robert Walden
Lighting can make or break a room. Bad lighting literally throws bad light on all the furniture and accessories in a room and completely plunders the ambiance. Keeping in mind a few aspects while choosing the right lighting will definitely ease a lot of stress that can be caused by the multitude of lighting available in the market!

The foremost point to remember is the purpose you want the lighting to serve in a particular room. This means that you should decide how much lighting the room requires depending on what the room is used for. For example, a reading room needs reading lamps places next to the seats or a TV room needs a more muted and low voltage lighting. After having decided this, there are several other key details to be noted to avoid those blunders while trying to choose the right lighting.

Lighting can be used to highlight objects or areas in the room. A beautiful lamp shade can itself be a focal point. Here the lighting itself becomes the point in focus. A painting or photo can be placed in the lime light. But this doesn't mean that the rest of the room is plunged in darkness!

In choosing the right lighting watching out for the height at which you place your chandeliers and other fixtures is a good idea. Create 'layers' of lighting. But don't get too caught up with this or else there will be an excess of light causing a glare which is what you should be avoiding.

Choosing the right light is not only about bulbs and different intensities of the light. It's also about choosing the right type of fixtures. The light fixtures need to be compatible with the general style of the room. Sleek looking fixtures in a room with sleek and modern furniture are what it means to match the lighting fixtures with the style.

Avoid dark colored shades as these limit the amount of light the bulbs emanate.

While choosing the right lighting for your bathroom ensure that the bath area is not missed out. This is often missed out as more emphasis is given to lighting in the vanity area. It would help to choose a type of lighting that would spread out over a larger area in the bathrooms.

Directional lighting is one type that can be used in any part of the house and it can be adjusted and directed to any area of choice when needed. It is highly functional in nature but not at the cost of aesthetics which makes it all the more appealing.

Do not forget that the color of the wall is going to have an impact on how your light is reflected. Lighter walls reflect more light compared to dark ones.

Finally, keeping environmental hazards in mind choosing lighting that consumes less power is the need of the hour. New types of lighting can be found to meet this need and the future is going to see more of this sort of lighting.
