1. Is it near a building, electric line, or side walk?
Make sure that the tree is not near anything that can disrupt its growth. Once it is planted, it becomes very hard to unearth and change its spot without killing it. Also consider its size, whether it is a dwarf, semi-dwarf, or a standard, and how big it can grow. If you have a dwarf tree, it will most likely need a diameter of eight feet in order to grow properly. A semi-dwarf will take up a little more space, probably about fifteen feet wide. Standard fruit trees take up the largest space-about thirty feet in diameter. Be sure to prune your trees every year to make sure it does not go beyond its expected size.
2. Is it getting all the sunlight it needs to survive?
The right amount of sunlight is very important for your fruit tree. If it gets too much sunlight, it is going to die; and if it hardly gets any light, it will not be able to grow as healthy as it should be. It is very important to make sure that it gets just the right amount.
3. Is the spot convenient for watering, harvesting, and pruning?
Never plant a fruit tree near your house or your fence, as this will get in the way of harvesting and pruning. The fruit could drop over your neighbor's yard if it grows over your fence. It is better to plant it near a sprinkler. If you can, invest a good sprinkler system. If you find it too expensive, you can always plant it near a hose.
4. Is the soil suitable for your tree?
Check the soil that you will be planting the tree on in terms of moisture, drainage, texture, and nutrients. Without these in proper condition, your tree will not be able to grow and produce fruit.
If you want to make sure that the soil is appropriate for your fruit tree, take a sample of it to a lab. It will cost you some money, but they can test it to see the available nutrients it can give to your tree. It will take a couple of days before you can get the result. If the soil is not fit for growing a tree, you can buy a fertilizer from any gardening store.
After you have prepared anything, you are now ready to decide what type of fruit tree you want to grow. Remember to take into consideration everything that you have planned when choosing your fruit tree. If you give everything that it needs, all your time, money, and effort will not go to waste.
