How to Choose the Right Thermostat

Dale Miller
Maybe you recently purchased new furnace or you finally decided to update your current thermostat after all these years. Maybe one of your children got a little too excited playing around the house and accidentally smashed your thermostat. Whatever the reason, you have a decision to make and there are so many thermostats to pick from. I can give you some tips on how to choose your new thermostat.

Thermostats these days are so modern and advanced. They come with a long list of possible features. Obviously, the more features you want the more the price goes up. Some of the basic ones can resemble that old mercury filled bronze one that has been so common. If your not looking for anything too complicated, they have thermostats that just run heat or just run heat and cooling with automatic or manual fan. The basic ones even come with an easy to read LCD digital screen so there's no guessing what number the needle is pointing on. This kind can cost around $25. You can view one this by going to www.amazon.com.

Some thermostats have small digital screens and some have the whole thing one big screen. The next level up is a programmable thermostat with all the same features of the other models plus an override button and a clock displaying the time and date. This type is best for someone who works a set schedule and leaves the house around the same time during the week. This way you can program the thermostat to let the temperature go down to 62 degrees or lower when your not home. It can be set to turn the heat on and bring the temperature up to 72 or higher for when you arrive home. These can save you hundreds on your gas bill each year and cost around $40

The Cadillac of thermostats can do everything including adjust the temperature with a remote from anywhere in your home. The high definition full color display screen can light up and be programmed up to a week. Control humidification and dehumidification from anywhere in the home. The outdoor temperature and humidity can be displayed using an outdoor sensor. It is energy saver smart which can cut your bill up to 33% if used as directed. The display is touch screen and is Tri-lingual using English, Spanish and French. It has a warranty of five years. One of the best is called the Prestige which goes for around $362. www.amazon.com.

Deciding which thermostat is right for you can be confusing. If you work and like it cool when you sleep then you would be better off choosing a programmable thermostat. Whether you live in warm or cool climate, this one has become the most popular choice. Go to honeywell.com to see the different types of thermostats available.
