Be appropriate. Wedding gifts should reflect the needs and interest of both the bride and groom, so keep this in mind when searching for a gift. Presents for the household, such as kitchen ware, vases or flower arrangements for the living room, or household appliances are acceptable gifts to give at a wedding. Depending on how well you know the bride and groom, you'll be able to purchase gifts that you're sure they will like, so you can be a little more adventurous when you're shopping. If you are a casual friend or coworker of the bride or groom, make sure you keep your gift basic but classy. Very personal gifts, such as clothing or cosmetic items for the bride and groom should be given at the bridal shower or bachelor/ bachelorette parties.
Be specific. When a couple is registered, make sure that you don't lose the information for the department stores-this is usually included in the wedding invitation. Be sure to go to these stores first to purchase a gift for the couple. Also, keep track of the list of items that the bride and groom need, so that you don't buy the same gift as someone else. If you absolutely can't find items that the couple has requested at registered stores, make sure you can find alternate items at department stores that are of the same caliber. Most times, the couple will completely understand, and still love your gift. Again, depending on your relationship with the couple, you may want to purchase more than one gift. If you decide to do this, buying gifts that can be used together is the best way to go. For instance, if the couple has requested sheet sets or bed accessories, you could purchase a sheet set, and add accent pillows that match the set for the couple to use as decoration.
Be creative. Don't feel obligated to spend a fortune on the wedding gift. What matters most is that you've put thought into your gift, and haven't waited until the last minute to purchase your gift. This is always obvious to the couple, and you don't want the bride and groom to open your gift and be disappointed. If you have a special skill or are especially crafty, it is perfectly appropriately to make a gift for the couple, but make sure it is wedding-worthy. You can do this by going over the list of the items the couple requested in their registry, so that you'll know what types of gifts guests will be giving. This also depends on how well you know the couple. Gifts that are obviously more heartfelt will be more appreciated when the bride or groom is a close friend or family member; acquaintances will appreciate gifts that are more general in nature.
