Work Area
Depending on the size and scope of your typical trimming job, you may benefit from having a weed eater with a higher engine displacement. For normal grass cutting and trimming jobs, a trimmer with a displacement between 25 and 30 cubic centimeters would be sufficient. For more demanding jobs on uneven ground with brush and other obstacles, a more powerful engine with a displacement between 30 and 40 cubic centimeters is needed. Continuous cutting on irregular surfaces may require professional grade equipment.
Power type
Electric powered weed eaters are good for infrequent use on small lawns. They are light-weight and less powerful than gas powered models. Be sure to purchase an extension cord with your weed eater to ensure you have enough range.
Battery powered trimmers have become more popular recently because of concerns with emissions. These weed wackers come with a rechargeable battery pack which allows you to operate without an extension cord. It's a good idea to buy extra batteries to make sure you have a sufficient supply of power for larger lawns.
Gas powered trimmers are the most commonly available models because of their versatility, range, and power. There are 4-stroke models that don't require gas-oil mixes and 2-stroke models if you don't mind mixing fuel when needed.
Cutting Options
Weed eaters come in both line and blade versions. Line trimmers are equipped with hard plastic cable to cut weeds and grass. The line can be extended if it breaks off by tapping the head of the weed eater on the ground. Blade trimmers come equipped with a cutting blade that is very effective for cutting larger brush and weeds.
These basic criteria should help you decide which trimmer is right for you. Efco brand trimmers are an excellent choice for personal and professional use. Check out some of Efco's model options at ishoplandscaping.com.
