How to Choose a Sports Bra

It's Important to Wear an Appropriate Sports Bra No Matter the Size of Your Breasts

Manufacturers have developed sports bras for daily activities and exercise and are carried in department, athletic and multi-style retailers. Sports brands such as Under Armour, Adidas, Hanes and Jockey are some brands that have expanded and carry several styles, colors and designs. A seasoned exerciser might be particular about a sports bra but if you're new to workout clothes you could feel lost with the options. If you're in the latter position take note of these points when you choose a sports bra.

Get the proper fit

A large percentage of women wear the wrong size bra so it's not uncommon to do the same when you choose a sports bra. Before you buy a sports bra get accurate measurements from a lingerie associate or have a personal trainer at the gym do it. Personal trainers usually have tape measures handy for clients and are accustomed to doing proper measurements.

Sports bra sizes will have a direct correlation with your everyday bra since some are based on the number and letter scale. If you wear a 36B in your regular bra that's what you would normally choose in a sports bra. Bras also run in a small to extra large range so if you wear a medium top then you'd most likely wear a medium. Different styles can cause the sizes to vary so try on several before making a decision to purchase one.

Choose a style

Styles range from pull-on to back hook to front hook closure styles. Take note if the sports bra was easy for you to get on or off. Shoulder injuries or reduced mobility can make a pull-on sports bra difficult to put on. In this case, a front closure bra is a good choice but you'll have to decide which is the most comfortable and convenient.

Check out the material

The main fabrics for sports bras are lycra, spandex, cotton and polyester while sophisticated materials have good benefits. Materials like wicking fabric helps keep moisture away from the body while some have a combination of antimicrobial materials. Keep in mind the activities you will participate in since sports bras are made for different activities such as aerobics, weight lifting and water sports.

What's your impact level

It's important to wear the correct impact level no matter the size of your breasts. Impact levels vary from light, medium and heavy. You can tell the grade by the thickness since light impact bras tend to be thinner with the thickest being high impact. The correct impact level will support the weight of your breasts and help stabilize them so there is little to no bounce. Choose the best impact level for you and go with a heavier impact if it's necessary. For instance, if you have small breasts there's no reason why you can't use a high impact bra. On the other hand, choose a high impact bra for large breasts and wear two if necessary.
