Tips for Purchasing a Swimsuit

Lisa White ISSA & AFPA CPT
As summer approaches buying a swimsuit is one of the more important clothing choices and sometimes the most difficult. Finding a size, cut and color that fits and makes you feel confident can become a journey you weren't prepared for. With every summer season there are hundreds of options to choose from and deciding which is the best one for you may seem futile. Before choosing a swimsuit take a moment to think about what is the most important thing when looking for a suit and go from there. Here are some tips to help make your swimsuit decision.

Style

The season has opened the doors to a tremendous amount of styles that will look good on every frame and shape. Styish suits are being created by both design houses and retailers to suit activities such as lounging, swimming, surfing and etc. Two piece suits, one-pieces, tankini, skirted one-pieces, convertible tops and boy short styles are just a few that are in high demand.

Cut

Just as swimsuits come in an array of styles; they also come in assortments of cuts. Full, moderate, tonga and v front bottoms are just a few selections to be paired with bandeau, triangle, convertible and super shaper tops. There are also many cuts available for full figured women with dress and skirt style bottoms.

Colors, Patterns and Designs

The color, pattern or design is a deeply personal choice when it comes to selecting a swimsuit. Due to each individuals skin tone and style the color chosen by you is an outlet of expression. Whether the color is lime green with black polka dots or solid red it should represent your personality and look good against your skin.

Embellished Swimsuits

Although swimsuits can be found with patterns or florals they can also be adorned will embellishments. Studs, buttons, embroidery, sea shells and beads are just a few items that can be found on swimsuits. Just as the basic style is important certain embellishments can be inappropriate for certain activities. For instance, a swimsuit with dangling chains can get caught on the slide at a water park and break.

Fit

Finding a suit that fits properly may take some time since each person's body is shaped differently and because swimsuit lines do not always have the same sizing. Although it's not always the case; high end designer suits usually run a bit smaller than other brands.

Price

The price of a swimsuit will depend on the retailer and designer. Wal-Mart offers the Ocean Pacific separates for as little as $7.50 and Ujena.com provides suits that range from the mid twenties to as high as $200 depending on the cut, fabric and style. Although these prices are the middle of the road there are many designers who have retail prices well into the hundreds.

Now that I'm in the 5th decade of my life, I think I'll avoid swimsuits like the plague. LOL!
