Is the product useful? Does it solve a problem? Is it filling a particular want or need? The more essential a product seems, the more likely visitors will be to purchase it. This is especially important to you, the affiliate marketer, because no purchases means no commissions. Make sure the product is targeted towards a specific purpose; products that have no real use are hard to sell, especially online. Also, make sure the product you're promoting is of real quality. If you wouldn't buy it, you shouldn't advertise it. If you feel confident about the product you're marketing, you'll be more likely to promote and, as a result, more likely to make commissions on successful sales.
Another important thing to consider when choosing an affiliate product is the popularity of the product. If no one is advertising it, there's a good chance that the market is very slim and there's not much profit in it. However, too much advertising jacks up prices for sponsored ads in major search engines like Google and Yahoo, and also causes the total worth of the market to be split between hundreds or thousands of other affiliate marketers. Your best bet is to choose a product that is specified to a specific market, such as bird training or troubleshooting computer hard-drives. These specific markets are subsections of larger markets (bird care and computers, in the above examples), and are often referred to as niches. Finding the right niche will help ensure success.
The product you want to advertise should have a great sales page. If you're an affiliate marketer, driving traffic to your seller's site is important. However, what is more important is having visitors purchase the product. If a seller has provided a good sales page for the product, then getting people to buy shouldn't be too hard. An effective sales page will be easy to understand, without a lot of ten-letter words or heavy technical jargon. Most visitors won't take the time to read the whole page if they can't understand it easily. You should also be sure the sales page describes the product, and that the purchase link is easy to locate. All these aspects help potential customers become purchasers.
Affiliate marketing can be a very lucrative business, as long as you do it correctly. If you can find a product that has a genuine use, that doesn't have too much competition and has a great, effective sales page, you've found a winner. With a successful marketing campaign, you will be well on your way to quitting your day job, and become a professional affiliate.
