How to Choose Trim and Binding for Sewing Projects

Cheryl Dennett
Trying to figure out what binding to use can get confusing. There are many different types of bindings, ribbons, and tapes. Here are some tips to help you figure out what you need to finish your sewing project.

The most commonly used binding is called bias tape, or bias binding. It is a narrow strip of fabric that is cut on the bias. You can use this product to finish edges instead of hemming them. It is also used as a decorative finish for some projects. The single fold bias tape will have the two edges folded in once each. There is also double fold bias tape that has the two edges folded in twice each. Each of these will come in several widths. If you are using a commercial pattern, it will tell you which you need. If not, you need to decide which will look best for your sewing project. The measurements that are on the packaging are how wide it is when folded. There is also quilt binding and blanket binding. They are very similar. Blanket binding is usually made from satin fabric and not cut on the bias. Quilt binding is usually double folded and it is 7/8 inches wide.

Another type of binding is hem tape. It is sometimes called seam binding. This is a narrow, woven ribbon that is about ½ an inch wide. You can find this type of binding in many colors and it will be in packaging that is much like that of bias tape. This type of binding is used to finish hems if you are trying to avoid having an extra layer of folded fabric. One edge of the tape is sewn to the raw edge of the fabric. The other edge is hemmed to the garment. This make a much cleaner looking hem. There is also a version of hem tape that is made of stretchy lace. It is lighter weight and used in the same way as regular hem tape.

There is another type of tape that is used behind fasteners. It is called twill tape. It normally is only available in black or white. It will reinforce lighter fabric when you are using snaps or some other type of fastener that might tear the fabric when pulled to unfasten.

There are also many decorative laces, ruffles, and fringes that you can use to liven up your sewing projects. They all come in a wide variety of styles and colors. Most fabric stores will sell these by the inch off of spools. If they are made of cotton, they will shrink just like any other cotton fabric. So, be sure to check the label to see what the content of the product is. It is always a good idea to wash anything before you use it. And, if you think it might shrink, buy a few extra inches to make up for the loss.

Knowing how to finish your sewing project will help you enjoy the task that much more. And, being able to make a choice when it comes to the finishing touch will ease some worries about getting it done correctly. Hopefully, this information will help you make the choice that works out best for you sewing projects.
