How to Choose What Type of Business to Open

Sharyl Stockstill
Deciding to open a business is only the beginning of a long journey. One of the first things you will have to decide is what type of business to open. There are hundreds of books and articles about how to open a business. These can be helpful, but they can also add to the general confusion.

Focus on what you enjoy doing. Identify things you like to do. What is the point of opening a business you do not enjoy? Instead, base your business upon things you do enjoy so that it is a pleasure to get up in the morning. Identify three or four things you really enjoy doing. Perhaps cooking is the top thing on your list, or maybe it is working with the elderly, or taking care of animals.

Once you identify the three or four things you enjoy doing the most, analyze the different types of businesses you could construct around those things. For example, if you enjoy taking care of animals, you can start a grooming business, a dog sitting business, or training animals for shows.

If you enjoy cooking, think about services you could offer clients where cooking is a part of the business, but may not be the focus of the business. If you understand how a household kitchen works, and how to improve upon the flow of the kitchen, consider something like interior design. You may not have the skills of an interior designer, but you can hire an interior designer to do the work for you while you cultivate customers and business.

One of the major things to look at when deciding on a business to start is what do the consumers need or want? If there is a niche that fits with your interests, you will be in demand once your business opens.

By examining market potential, customer bases, costs, and competition, you can identify the perfect business to open. You do not have to start something entirely new to be successful. If you can find a way to improve upon goods and services that are already in place, you will have a successful business on your hands.
