How to Choose a Type of Yoga that is Right for You

Cheryl Dennett
Yoga is a rich tradition that is constantly evolving to meet the needs of all types of individuals. Because there are so many types to choose from, you are sure to find one suited to you and your physical needs. There are many factors to consider when choosing a type of yoga. Here is some information to help you make an informed choice.

Yoga rewards those who devote themselves to the practice with vibrant health and well being. The type of yoga you choose depends upon why you want to practice. If you are inflexible, and have tight muscles, you may want to create more flexibility and space within your body. The primary goal of yoga is to increase physical comfort and range of motion. Someone else may feel extremely stressed out and have problems such as headaches and lower back tightness. This person will want to find a type of yoga that focuses on relaxation, breathing, and meditation techniques. A class with passive yoga postures is ideal for someone recovering from an illness or surgery. And, still yet, another person may want a yoga class that is challenging and very active. This is the type of yoga that makes you sweat and build strength. Try a variety of class types before you decide on the one that is right for you and your physical healthy levels.

After each class, there are questions you should ask yourself. Did you receive attentive guidance from the teacher. Did you feel a little sore or possibly get an injury? Do you feel energized and calm, or frustrated and stressed out? Was the class small enough to get the amount of individualized attention you wanted? Did you feel comfortable and at ease? Were the teacher's instructions clean enough that you could follow and learn from them? All of these questions will help you decide what type of yoga is right for you.

It is also possible to find yoga videos for home practice. However, they should supplement, not replace, a yoga class. It is very important to receive feedback from an instructor. This is how you know whether or not you are doing the poses and breath work correctly. Another possibility is to go on a yoga retreat. They are usually in beautiful locations and you can immerse yourself in yoga and relax and take in the sights. This is a wonderful to study a specific type of yoga.

The most important tool you can take with you to a yoga class is an open mind. The hardest part of yoga practice is rolling out the mat. Hopefully, this information will help you choose the type of yoga that is correct for you.
