Choosing to vacation destination within 100 miles of your home is a great way to save on rising gas prices. Are you already familiar with neighboring cities and towns? Do you know what attractions are within 100 miles of your home? Here are some great tips to help you explore vacation destinations close to home.

Search

Start searching online for attractions and destinations close to your city. Search for activities that you would like to do while on vacation. Visit your official state Web site, to find out about attractions, festivals, and activities that you may not be aware of.

Activities

Are there any activities that you have been thinking about trying? Perhaps you would like to learn to ski, sky dive, rock climb, or kayak. Maybe you want to take flying lessons, but have yet to register for the first class. During you vacation the support of your family and friends may be the boost you need to finally try these sports. Also think of age appropriate outdoor and physical activities for all members of the family. Brainstorm and present new activities that your children have not tried before.

Poll

Present all of the activities, tours, and ideas that you have for the vacation. Let every family member vote for the destination, activities, and lodging. One family member may want to experience a state park, learn to fish, and stay in a log cabin on the park grounds. Your teenagers may want to go to a theme park, visit a large skateboard park, and stay in the downtown area. Take the ideas into consideration, and give everyone what they want within reason. Aim to try something new, that each family member suggests.

Go

Schedule a date, and go. Try not to make tentative plans that may or may not happen. Use this trip as a way to motivate your children and teens. While on vacation keep a journal of all of the experiences. Use this guideline to add digital pictures to, to share your vacation online with the rest of your family and friends who did not attend. Turn the digital photos into a coffee table book to share with visitors to your home.

Planning with your family is a great way to get everyone in the family excited about the upcoming trip. Letting your child experience something new will create unique memories. Use these tips to create a memorable vacation.
