How to Choose a Weight Lifting Belt

A proper weight lifting belt will help prevent injury to your back while you're working out. There are a few things you need to keep in mind before buying one though. This article will give you a few tips on buying a belt for weight lifting.

Width

One of the first things to consider when choosing a weight lifting belt is the width in the back. The ideal belt for you largely depends on your body size. Most people find a belt that's between four and six inches to be suitable. As a rule of thumb, the taller you are the wider you may want the belt to be.

Locking

Another thing to consider when buying weight lifting belts is the type of locking mechanism it has. Some designs have fixed buckles which offer more support. However, these belts are harder to get on and off. Some belts have quick-release levers to make this easier.

Material

One of the next things to think about when buying a belt for weight lifting is the type of material that it's made of. Two of the most common options include leather and nylon. Leather belts offer more support while nylon belts offer more flexibility for making various movements. Leather will also be rougher on your skin than nylon.

Fit

It's also important that you take the fit of your weight lifting belt into consideration. The belt should fit snugly around your waist. However, it shouldn't be too tight.

Competition

If you're lifting in a competition, the type of belt you buy is important. Certain competitions don't allow certain belts. Therefore, make sure the one you buy will be legal for you to use.

These are a few tips for choosing weight lifting belts. If you're a taller person, you may want to consider buying one with a wider back. The locking mechanism is also important since you have to balance between support and how easy it is to get on and off.
