How Christian Parents Can Fight the Culture

Tips for Restoring Godly Values in Our Schools

When a recent news story revealed how seventeen high school students in Gloucester, Massachusetts made an agreement to all get pregnant and raise their babies together, I'm sure it must have shaken even the most liberal of parents.

It's just another sign of our decadent culture. It's not just in the liberal northeast where outrageous headlines such as this have recently made the news. In Boulder, Colorado, a speaker came to a high school advocating experimenting with sex and drugs. In a high school in Memphis, Tennessee, high school students simulated sex acts at a school dance.

These are only some of the recent disturbing headlines that have sent concerned parents into shockwaves.

If you're a Christian who upholds the godly values outlined in the Bible, then you should be beyond shocked. But not just shocked, but concerned enough to stand up and fight back. Dr. James Dobson, President of Focus on the Family, has often said that it's not so much that Christians aren't disturbed about the culture, but it's a tragedy that that they don't speak out to the culture, as well as do something about it.

How Did We Get Here?

On the other hand, should we really be that shocked? Couldn't we see this "coming down the pipe" after decades of moral decline in our schools? Although we're appalled at headlines such as the pregnant teen pact, we shouldn't be that surprised. This didn't happen overnight. It's like the frog you place in water and then gradually raise the temperature of the water. At first, it's just a little warm. By the time the frog's actually fried, it's too late. It began back in the early 1960s with the removal of prayer from our public schools. And, there was the sexual revolution, followed by the tragic Supreme Court decision of Rowe vs. Wade to legalize abortion in 1973. Gradually, God and godly values got booted out of our schools, as well as our U.S. Constitution.

World View vs. God's View

What is your world view? In other words how do you see the world? Do you base your decisions and actions in life on Biblical scripture or do you adhere to a world view? A world view is a set of assumptions we hold about the world. If you subscribe to "political correctness" chances are you're more concerned about offending than standing up for what's morally right.

But true Christians don't follow the world's values. They're in the world but not of the world.

How Christian Parents Can Fight Back

Get involved - Know what's going in your child's school by attending PTAs, open houses, and other meetings. Serve as a room mother, volunteer, etc. It's when you're in the classroom that you can get a better feel for what's going on.

Study textbooks - Carefully examine your child's textbooks, looking for signs of text that are contrary to Judaeo-Christian values. Then, voice your concerns to the school authorities, as well as your local school board.

Visit school libraries - Contact your child's school librarian and ask if you can come by and check out the books. If you find shelves of books regarding witches in an elementary school library, voice your concern. It's hard to believe, but there was a school a few years ago that forbid any of James Dobson's books, but was filled with books about witches and other demonic materials. As for middle and high schools, look for books that would promote any new age materials or books regarding practicing safe sex and/or alternative life styles, etc.

Pray - Most of all pray for your public schools. Organize groups of other concerned Christian parents and regularly get together, lifting up the schools, teachers, children, and all that concerns them. Check for a "Moms in Touch" group near you which meets regularly for prayer.

If you've done all you know to do and are still frustrated, do what thousands of concerned Christian parents are doing - either switch to a Christian school or pull your kids out of school and homeschool.

It's worth the sacrifice of time and/or money when you consider how the decadent modern culture continues to destroy our young people.

Thank you for writing this. I do not have children, so I find that it would be difficult to write something like this.
