How to Make Christmas Gift Tags Out of Cereal Boxes
Gorgeous, Creative yet Cheap or Free Homemade Gift Tags
First, you need card stock. But, don't bother going out and buying it. You can use your empty cereal boxes. Cut up those the shape you want them. If you'd like to string them around gift bags rather than attach them on boxes, punch a hole in them.
Now, you're going to need to cover up the cardboard and what's printed on the box. In fact, if you have cereal boxes that already have a printed Christmas theme on them, you may even want to keep it that way and cover up the other side. There are so many ways you can do this. You can wrap wrapping paper that you already have around them. Cut them to just a little bigger than the shape of your tag. You can tape around the edges. Don't worry about seeing the tape. I'll go over how you can cover that up later. My favorite glue is mod podge. Don't underestimate the power of mod podge! Go through magazines, mail or any paper that has red and green on it. You can even print something from the Internet and add that.
Make a collage of the different colors and materials. Look around your house and see what materials you may be able to use. You'll find a lot of things that can be useful. Look at your Christmas decorations and even ornaments. You can rub some glitter off of an ornament you already have or pull a few pieces of tinsel from some Christmas garland to decorate with. You can even use body glitter if you have it or cake decorating sprinkles.
Be sure if you're using mod podge that you include their names in your design beforehand. Otherwise, you'll need to use a magic marker or a Sharpie pen. If you don't like your handwriting, you can type out the names and print them from your computer as well in any font you like.
A wonderful idea is instead of putting the recipient's name on the tag, you can mod podge their picture on the tag instead. Just print a nice picture of them and cut out their face. You can go around the seam with some puffy paint if you'd like as well.
Cover the tag entirely making sure you wrap some paper around the edges if you don't want to do the edges separately. Cover the entire thing with the mod podge and let it dry.
If you'd like seamless edges, there are many ways you can go around the edge of your tag. One way is to use puffy paints. But, don't go right around the edge. Do one side and wait until it dries before doing the other. When you're done it will look seamless if you get close enough to the edges. Another way you can do this is by using cotton balls. You can attach the cotton balls to the edges by using either a glue gun or more mod podge.
This is a really fun project that you don't have to go out and buy materials for. The only thing you'll really need is the mod podge and something to string into the tag if you'd like to hang them from gift bags. You'll be amazed at how creative they look and you'll have fun doing it as well.
