How to Cite Your Research Information in Your Papers

Ashley Barnes
I learned how to do the following in-paper citing when I was at college. It has helped me a lot when I had to do papers for my classes. This came in handy when I had to learn to write an APA-style paper for three of my online classes. The following examples for citing your sources, as well as the information that you have used in your research paper, can be in APA or MLA format. I hope you find this useful as I did learning to use both styles for any and all my classes.

MLA: Websites

Example 1:

"In 1988, Thailand had elected it' first Prime Minister: Chatichai Choonhaven, of the Thai Nation Party. In January of 2001, a telecommunications multimillionaire by the name of Thaksin Shinawatra with a newly formed party, Thai Rak Thai, had won the election based on economic growth and development. It wasn't until September 19, 2006 when Thaksin was overthrown by a group of military leaders. (U.S. Department of State)"

Example 2:

"According to The World Factbook, Thailand has a free-enterprise economy with general pro-investment policies."

MLA: Books

Example 1:

"For Woodrow Wilson, he didn't have any competition when he was up for re-election for the Presidency. But when it came to the primaries, he had 20 of the states in order to win the election or even to pull ahead in the election itself. (Stephen J. Wayne, The Road to the White House)"

Example 2:

" Each candidate has to try to get more delegates than the other. Wilson managed to get 53.5% of the delegates from the 20 states that he acquired, according to a chart in The Road to the White House."

MLA: Newspapers

Example 1:

" Hughes also managed to get in the range of 158 delegates (Dispatches From All States Indicate a Close Election), which includes the following states: California, Delaware, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Wisconsin, and Wyoming to 197 of the delegates, which has most of the same states, but one: New York."

Example 2:
"This was stated about the latter two:
"In his speech the President intends continuing the political argument begun at Shadow Lawn last Saturday before the young Democratic voters. He is known to believe that the coming election will be decided by independents and, therefore, tomorrow he will make an especial appeal to them. The President will seek to show that because of legislative achievements of the last three years the Democratic Party more than the Republican Party deserves the support of Progressives and independent voters." (President Happy Over His Trip West)"

APA: Websites

Example:

" According to the article found on www.culturalsurvival.org, the Alaskan Natives population 626,932, only 119,241 were covered by healthcare."

APA: Books

Example 1:

" According to A. Mike Aragon (1999), he found, along with help from interns, that Native Indian clients had difficulty keeping regular appointments and establishing rapports; also being unmotivated, unreliable, substance abusing, language challenged and were developmentally slow. (Mental Healthcare for Urban Indians)"

Example 2:

" According to Aging and Osteoporosis in Native Americans from Pecos Pueblo, New Mexico by Christopher Ruff, on page 62, the following was stated about vertebral osteophytosis:..."

APA: Journals

Example:

" In the third article entitled, "Comparison of Three Treatment Approaches to Decreasing Cardiovascular Disease Risk in Nondiabetic Insulin-Resistant Dyslipidemic Subjects," by Fahim Abbasi et., al., they talk about their study on overweight people who are not on insulin and nondiabetic."
