One of the first thing that you should keep in mind when cleaning a parakeet's cage or something that you will want to make sure that your child thinks about when cleaning a budgie's cage is how often it needs to be done. Although it is something that you will have to do regularly it is not something that is hard. Once a week you should wipe the cage down with a non-toxic cleaner that is bird safe, like the one found on Budgiekeet.com. In addition to using the cleaner you will want to use a clean damp rag to wipe the cage again to remove any residue from the cleaner. This is not difficult and again only needs to be done once week, along with washing the bottom tray and grate of the cage if your parakeet's cage has one. While you only have to this once a week there are things that will need to be done daily.
Once a day it is important to clean the food and water dishes that are in the cage, most likely you will have a food and water dish for each budgie that you have. To simplify this process have two water dishes and food dishes for every parakeet that you have so you can have a clean and dry pair ready to go everyday and wash which of the pairs was used most recently everyday at your convenience. When washing a water and food dish use a mild dish detergent and make sure that you rinse thoroughly and dry the dish before adding any water or food to it. The paper at the bottom of the cage should be changed everyday and any perches or toys that have dropping on them should be wiped off. Extra care can be taken with the perches and toys on a weekly basis.
It is a good idea to keep things interesting for your budgies so rotate their toys and wash the toys that you take out of the cage before you put them back in. This is true for any perches that you remove for cleaning. Wooden perches may need to be replaced from time to time as well as washed. When they are washed they need to completely dry in the sun before they can be returned to the cage. If a perch you are washing has some rough spots sand it down. Lastly once a month it is a good idea to wash a parakeet's care thoroughly. Remove your budgie and everything else from the cage and let the cage soak in a bath. As usual use bird safe and non-toxic cleaner on all parts of cage and rinse thoroughly. Before returning you budgie to the cage make sure that the cage is completely dry. Once you get the hang of it you'll get a good routine for both you and your budgie when it comes time to clean the parakeet cage.
