To clean your carpet without chemical-based products, you must make a commitment to take care of your carpet on a regular basis. This means that you must not wait for the dirt to pile up before you act. Professional carpet cleaning companies recommend getting your carpet cleaned about every three months. But since you will be doing this yourself, you don't need to wait every three months.
Begin by always making sure you pick up any spill as soon as it happens. Use paper towel to soak it up without rubbing to avoid damage to the carpet fibers. After that, use eco-friendly detergent and mix with hot water. Use a towel to blot out the stains without rubbing it. Follow this with a spot of white vinegar to completely clear the area off the stains.
For heavier stains, items such as baking soda or cornstarch could be used to take off greasy mess on your carpet. Use hot water with vinegar to disinfect places soiled by animal's feces or urine. These products are also good at cleaning hardened stains from red wine and deep colored messes. Another great chemical-free product is hydrogen peroxide. I even pour this in my bath water for great refreshing bath. Hydrogen peroxide also removes red wine or red sauces off your white colors and carpets, but be sure to test it on a small area of your carpet to be sure it doesn't mess the color of your carpet. You can steam clean your carpet with hot water mixed with white vinegar and eco-friendly laundry detergent.
All in all, you are the one that has to take the initiative to clean as soon as the spill is made. Leaving it for a long time makes it more difficult to deep clean and get the stain off later. Make your home safe for your children and yourself by using natural and eco-friendly products to clean your carpet. There are a lot of new products online so just do your search. Be sure to vacuum regularly, several times a week if possible. Good luck!
