Although we may try to keep our carpets looking clean and new, spills and stains are an inevitable part of life. The trick to enjoying clean carpets in our homes is to treat any stains that occur the moment we see them. This will prevent the stain from penetrating deep into carpet fibers and make them easier to clean. But there are certain steps that must be taken in order to learn how to clean carpets effectively! We've listed the best methods of removing liquid stains, dirt stains, pet stains, and more below.
For wet stains - Remove any moisture
For cleaning carpets caused by wet stains, such as those caused by beverage spills, pets, or wet food spills, begin by removing any moisture. To do this, grab a roll of paper towels and dab the carpet. Do not rub, as this will only embed the stain deeper and spread it to a larger area.
As you dab the stain, you'll be able to see the liquid transfer from the carpeting to the paper towel. Continue dabbing, disposing of the paper towels when they become wet, and replace them with dry ones. Continue until there is no remaining sign of moisture.
For dry stains - Vacuum away debris
The best way to clean carpet stains that have been in place for some time, or to clean carpet stains that are not caused by liquid, is to thoroughly vacuum the area to remove dirt, pet hair, and other debris. By vacuuming the carpeting beforehand, you'll create a cleaner surface that will absorb any chemicals that will be used to clean the stain later on. Treat the stain
Once all liquid and/or debris have been removed the carpet, you'll want to begin cleaning carpets by thoroughly treating the stain with an effective stain remover. See our recommendations for the best stain removers.
Saturate the carpet thoroughly and allow it to set a minimum of five minutes. Stubborn stains may require the stain remover to set for a longer period of time. When working to remove pet stains, they will require the use of an enzyme-based product, which will not only help to break up the protein in urine and fecal matter, but will also eliminate the scent and stop the animal from revisiting the same spot to relieve himself. Work-in the stain remover
The best way to clean carpets and remove stains is to use a soft bristled brush. The absolute worst thing you can do is use a stiff wire brush to try to scrub off the carpet stain. Not only will it not work, but you run the risk of pulling apart the carpet weaving. Thus, you'll want to gently work in the stain remover with a soft cloth, toothbrush, or other soft-bristled brush. Work in small circular motions until you see the stain begin to disappear.
BLOT!
Once the stain remover has set for an adequate period of time, you will, once again, want to blot the area with either a clean cloth or paper towels. Remember, do not rub the stain. Press down on the area, dabbing with the towel, until you see the stain transfer off the carpeting and onto the towel. Turn the towel over (or replace wet paper towels) so that you are continuously working with a clean dry area. When there is no moisture left to transfer, you can stop blotting. The stain should be completely removed at this point. If not, reapply more stain remover and allow it to set awhile longer.
