Things You'll Need
Plastic grocery bags
Plenty of paper towels
Household spray cleaner
Old cloth
1. Clean Up the Worst of the Cat or Dog Vomit As Soon As Possible With Paper Towels
You should clean-up spills and messes as quickly as possible to reduce the risk of stains. Part of the grossness of cleaning vomit is its warmth. According to Cat World, a cat's normal body temperature is between 100.5 to 102.5 degrees. Feeling something squishy in my fingers was bad enough. Add warmth to that, and it really made my stomach churn.
To remedy these problems, cover the vomit with several paper towels. I use enough towels so I won't feel the vomit. That can lead to gagging or vomiting. Then, place your hand (or hands) all the way down to the bottom of a plastic grocery bag so you're wearing it like a glove. Place your "gloved" hand(s) over the towels and pick-up all the vomit you can. Don't rub the towels back and forth or you'll just spread the mess farther. It's best if you can pick-up the majority of the cat or dog vomit in one grab. Then, all you have to do is pull one hand - holding the soiled paper towels- back towards the plastic grocery bag. Use your other hand to turn the bag inside out to contain the vomit and prevent gagging or vomiting. Tie up the bag and toss it in the trash.
Repeat this step if you were unable to clean-up most of the vomit mess the first time. You must pick-up as much as possible before you proceed to the next step.
2. Use a Spray Cleaner to Clean-Up the Remainder of the Cat or Dog Vomit
Now that the worst of the mess is cleaned up, it's easy to finish the task. Hard surfaces like tile or wood flooring can be cleaned by using additional paper towels and a household spray cleaner. I clean the remnants of vomit off carpet and rugs with an old cloth and a spray cleaner designed for carpets. (Paper towels tend to fall apart and leave pieces behind in the carpet.) Whatever product you use, just make sure its suited to the specific surface you're cleaning. Follow the manufacturer's directions to achieve the best results.
Place the used paper towels in another plastic grocery bag. Tie the bag up, toss it in the trash, and you're finished with the task without gagging or vomiting.
