How to Clean Your Clothes Naturally

Gwendolyn Taylor
Most people do not realize that a household product as simple as laundry detergent or other clothes and laundry cleaning products can have a negative impact on the environment. Regular commercialized detergent and other cleaners contain many harmful and synthetic chemicals that are not ideal for the earth. Think about all those times you wash your clothes. Now factor in all the people who are also washing their clothes at the same time and how much of the chemicals are being washed down in to our drains into the ocean. Something simple as using safer, earth friendly ingredients to make your own laundry detergent and clothes cleaning products is one big step in the right direction to preserving nature.

In order to create your natural laundry detergent (in the powdered form) you will need to obtain the following ingredients: one bar of natural soap that is not the antibacterial kind, a half of cup of borax, a half of cup of baking soda, a grater (used to grate cheese or carrots), and a re-sealable, airtight container. These can all be found in the laundry product and food sections in your local mass merchandise store or grocery store. Follow these simple and easy directions. Use the grater to grate the bar of soap and place the grated soap particles into the re-sealable container. Thoroughly mix in the borax and baking soda with the grated soap in the container. Make sure that all of the ingredients are combined and blended well together. You can use a one tablespoon equivalent for smaller laundry loads or on clothes that are not so heavily soiled. You can use two tablespoon equivalents for larger laundry loads or on clothes that are more heavily soiled.

You can also use the following natural ingredients to clean your clothes. For spot washing, you can use baking soda and/or borax to spot clean and even deodorize your clothing that has lingering unpleasant scents. Washing soda can be used to diminish grease and remove tough stains on soiled spots. Vinegar (preferably white to prevent discoloration) or lemon juice (with moderation, since it does contain slight color) can be used to also diminish grease spots on clothes and provide a pleasant, fresh scent for your clothing. All of these ingredients can be found in your local mass merchandise store or grocery store, and all of these are considered to be environmentally safe and conscious.
