How to Clean a Composite Deck

Jules Wright
Composite decks do not require as much maintenance and repair as natural wood decks. Natural wood decks need to be re-stained and sealed on a regular basis and are also susceptible to damage caused by insects as well as water damage and rot. Composite decks resemble wood but are made of compressed wood or wood fibers that are mixed with plastics and glue. You do not need to re-stain or seal them. However, you will want to keep a composite deck clean and well maintained in order to keep it looking good and for extending its life. Like any other deck, they do get dirty and also mold or stain, so they need to be cleaned on a regular basis. Here are some tips for cleaning a composite deck.

Cleaning your composite deck is actually quite easy. All you need is a deck wash or detergent, a scrub or bristle brush, and warm water and a bucket. Mix your cleaning solution in a bucket with warm water and then apply it to the deck. Let the cleaner sit on the deck for approximately fifteen minutes to soak in. Next take your scrub or bristle brush and use it scrub away the dirt, stains and debris that have built up on your composite deck. Scrub a small area at a time and thoroughly rinse with water. If you try to scrub the whole deck before rinsing it, you may stain the deck with your cleaner. Some people prefer using a power washer to clean a composite deck instead of scrubbing with a brush. However, you need to be careful not to damage the deck. If you use a power washer you need to put it on a gentle setting.

If scrubbing with your deck cleaner or detergent doesn't get all the stains out, you can try using other types of cleaners to get them out. You can try a degreasing cleaner with hot water to get out grease stains. Another thing you can do is add bleach to whatever cleansing solution you are using.

Composite decks are pretty easy to maintain. If you take the time to clean your deck on a fairly regular basis, it will keep your deck well maintained and prevent it from mold build up. You and your family will be able to enjoy your deck for years to come, if you just follow these simple composite deck cleaning tips on a regular basis.
