If you own a CRT monitor, they can be cleaned easier than the newer ones. One of the major tips to remember when cleaning a CRT monitor is to never spray any type of liquid directly on the monitor. Get a soft cloth and dampen it with water or a mild window cleansing solution. Wipe the monitor with the damp cloth. If you prefer, you can also use the same cloth to clean the entire outer case of the monitor too. Never open the inside of the monitor-doing so can cause electric shock.
LCD and flat panel computer monitors also need regular cleaning. When they are not properly cared for, the screen can become dusty and make it hard to see. These types of screens are more sensitive than CRT monitors. They are more prone to scratches and damage. Take care not to touch the screen too much with your fingers. Finger-prints will only cause the screen to get dirtier.
When cleaning a LCD or flat panel computer monitor, use a soft dry cotton cloth. Gently wipe the areas that contain finger-prints and smudges. If the dry cotton cloth does not remove the smudges completely, dampen it to try again. As you clean your screen, the best method to use is wiping from top to bottom. Never use a paper towel on LCD or flat panel screens because it will scratch it. Also, do not use ammonia, ammonia-based solutions or other strong household cleaners because they will yellow the screen.
You should dedicate a cloth that is used only for cleaning your LCD screen. Don't use old ones as they will have dust particles that can scratch the screen. If possible, buy a separate soft cotton cloth that will be used for only cleaning your computer monitor. Most computer and retail stores offer LCD cleaning cloths that you buy too.
It is ideal to clean your computer monitor often. Looking at a dirty computer screen is almost the same as trying to see through dirty eye-glasses. By keeping dust and dirt away from your computer, you can help extend its life.
