How to Clean a Goldfish Bowl

Shannon Frye
The first thing that you want to do is upgrade the goldfish's tank. A goldfish bowl is very inhumane. You cannot expect a goldfish to live it's life inside of a tiny bowl. All fish need oxygen in the water in order to survive. You also need a filter system to make sure that the harmful elements are removed from the water. You will want to purchase at least a 2 1/2 gallon tank from a local pet store. You will still need to clean the goldfish bowl in order to make time to go purchase your goldfish a new tank. Here's what you need to do to clean the goldfish bowl.

You can purchase a scrub brush from the pet store. Make sure you purchase one which is rough because you will probably need to get off a hard water deposit on the goldfish bowl. You will always want to use filtered water with goldfish bowls and you will need to add fresh water at least once per day or every other day. Goldfish will often times die inside of a goldfish bowl because there is no oxygen in the water. When you pour the water into the bowl, that's the only oxygen that the fish has to live off of until you add more water to the bowl.

You can purchase a bottle brush that will work very well to clean the bowl out. These brushes are made to clean items which are circular. You can also purchase a variety of different brushes to clean your tank from the pet store. A toothbrush will work well also. You want to make sure that you get all of the grime and slime off of the goldfish bowl each time that you clean the bowl. Never let the bowl get to the point where you cannot get the deposits off of the inside of the bowl. Goldfish bowls are cheap and can be purchased for a dime a dozen.

You will want to consider purchasing a bigger fish tank right away. Your fish will not live every long in this goldfish bowl. You can at least purchase a bubbler to place into the goldfish bowl so that the fish can get some oxygen. Without oxygen, your fish will die. If you purchase a bigger tank you will only need to clean the tank out once every 2 weeks, instead of daily. Wouldn't you rather spend your time doing something else rather than adding new water to your goldfish bowl every day or every other day?
