How to Clean a Microfiber Sofa

Crystal Ray
Microfiber is one of the easiest types of material to clean and care for, and it is resilient and durable. It is one of the most popular materials used to cover sofas and chairs, and it is as affordable as it is stylish. I have microfiber furniture, and I have cleaned it by hand many times to get rid of spills and spots. Those with a microfiber sofa will find that it is very easy to clean and stands up well to kids and pets. If you are wondering how to clean a microfiber sofa, consider the following information on removing spills and spots, and how to keep it looking clean for years to come.

Precautionary Statement

It is always best to clean any type of furniture according to manufacturer instructions. When in doubt, try cleaning a microfiber sofa in an inconspicuous area with a white cloth before trying a alternate cleaning method in a visible location. Examine the cleaning cloth for signs of color transfer. Allow the test area to dry, and examine the material before continuing.

How to Clean Spills on a Microfiber Sofa

Liquid including pet stains on a microfiber sofa should be blotted up immediately after they occur. Use white paper towels to soak up as much of the liquid as possible. Once the liquid has been soaked up, wipe the area using a small amount of mild liquid detergent, cool water, and a soft rag. Rinse it in the same manner with a clean damp rag. Lastly, go over the damp microfiber with a clean dry cloth by brushing the fabric in one direction. When properly cleaned the spill will be unapparent.

For urine stains, add a small amount of white vinegar to the soapy water, and after rinsing with a clean damp rag, sprinkle baking soda over the clean fabric. When the baking soda pulls all of the moisture out of the microfiber, vacuum it away along with any traces of odor, and brush the fabric in one direction using a soft dry cloth. Repeat the cleaning process if necessary to remove any remaining odor.

How to Clean Dried Substances on a Microfiber Sofa

If you discover an unidentified dried substance on a microfiber sofa, use a damp rag to wipe away the debris. If it remains after trying cool clear water, use the aforementioned directions to wipe it away. If a stain persists, use a commercial stain removing product according to product label instructions.

How to Keep a Microfiber Sofa Looking Like New

A microfiber sofa should be cleaned by a professional once each year or more often if necessary. In the meantime, remove the cushions and vacuum the sofa once each week. Use a lint roller when necessary, and your microfiber sofa will remain looking as good as new.
