First off I suggest getting the vacuum out and using the brush attachment to the hose on your vacuum, vacuum any loose dust and dirt off of your mini blinds. This helps to keep from getting dust all over yourself and everything else while you are taking the mini blinds down from the windows.
Now I will be giving you several different suggestions for cleaning your mini blinds so that they look clean and shiny again!
Suggestion One:
Fill your bathtub with warm water and a detergent such as dish or laundry detergent. Put your mini blinds in the bathtub and let soak for at least an hour. This will allow the dirt and grime on your mini blinds to break down and rinse off easier. Depending on how dirty your mini blinds are you may or may not have to use a sponge or cloth to wipe the dirt and dust away. Now you can rinse them off and hang them someplace to dry before re-hanging in your windows.
Suggestion Two:
Once again you will fill your bathtub with warm water, adding about one cup of gel dishwasher detergent with about one cup of ammonia. NOTE: Make sure to buy a dishwasher detergent that is WITHOUT Bleach as mixing bleach and ammonia causes hazardous fumes. Let you mini blinds soak in the bathtub for a couple hours. During this time you can take the time to wash your windows that the mini blinds hang in since it will be easier to do with the mini blinds already taken down! Let your mini blinds hang or lay flat to dry before re-hanging them in the windows!
Suggestion Three:
If the weather is nice outside you can use this suggestion which will make cleaning your mini blinds easier than an indoor method. You will need to have a bucket, sponge and hose handy for this suggestion. Take your bucket and mix one part water to one part ammonia. Lay your mini blinds outside on either concrete or someplace clean and then using your sponge to run the water/ammonia mixture over the mini blinds. Let the mini blinds stand for about 5 minutes and then rinse off with your hose. Hang them up outside to dry until ready to hang back in the windows.
The above suggestions are for vinyl and aluminum blinds only, if you have wooden mini blinds, here is a suggestion for those as well.
For wooden mini blinds do not soak in water because too much water can cause your mini blinds to discolor or warp. Using just a damp sponge or cloth with a little amount of dishwashing detergent wipe the mini blinds off.
For all mini blinds you can take a dryer sheet and rub all over them to keep dust and dirt from collecting as much on your mini blinds. Ta-Da you now have shiny clean mini blinds, happy cleaning everyone!
