How to Clean a Queen Size Quilt and Proper Care

Queen Size Quilts Need Proper Care or They Will Become Ruined

A queen size quilt set can be quite a task to clean up. Queen size quilts, unless cleaned and cared for correctly, will get ruined and tarnished. Your queen size quilt may be a family heirloom, passed down from some distant ancestor, or you might have bought it at a garage sale. Either way, it needs sufficient attention to remain in good shape for years to come.

Laundry detergent should be chosen carefully when you're cleaning a queen size quilt. It's a delicate piece of art, even if it's not that old. Don't use the same stuff that you would throw on your t-shirts and jeans because these types of detergent are much too harsh for a queen size quilt and will often fade it faster. Craft, fabric and sewing stores usually carry more gentle detergents for specialty uses like these.

Even if you have the right laundry detergent, though, a washing machine on the wrong setting can be the best way to ruin your queen size quilt set. Washing by hand isn't a feasible alternative, though, as it's often physically demanding and harmful to the quilt's stitching. Queen size quilts are very heavy when they're wet because they're made from three layers of material, and this makes it difficult to maneuver them.

When you wash your queen size quilts, you need to make sure your washing machine has enough space for them to move about easily. Split the quilts into two different loads if necessary to make sure they get cleaned properly. Don't use hot water on your queen size quilts; that's a good way to ruin the coloring. Use lukewarm water on the gentle cycle. With this cycle, the soap may not come out all the way on the first try. Just put your queen size quilt through the rinse again, or as many times as it takes to remove all the remnants of soap.

Drying your bulky queen size quilt is just as troublesome as washing it, if not more so. With all that weight, you shouldn't put your quilt straight into the dryer or right out onto the line. Instead, lay it flat until most of the water is evaporated, then put it on air dry with no heat to finish the job. These precautions will preserve your stitches.

Properly caring for your queen size quilts will make them last much longer, and your children will be able to enjoy them as much as you did. Just remember that quilts are delicate pieces of art, and carelessness is detrimental to them.
