How to Clean Silver Jewelry Effectively

Keep Your Jewelry as Shiny as the Day You Bought It

BS
Jewelry gets dirty very easily, especially if you wear it everyday. Most people have one piece of jewelry that they keep on their body at all times, and this piece can lose a lot of its shine and beauty after being worn for so long. Many people take their jewelry to the store where they originally purchased it or to another jeweler, where they pay money to have their jewelry cleaned. That's one way to do it, but why spend money when you can clean your jewelry effectively all by yourself? You can clean silver jewelry using these tips and tricks:

Clean your silver jewelry using silver polish
Silver polish is a wonderful way to clean your jewelry. Obviously, this polish is made for silver, so there is no need to worry about ruining the silver. This is very simple, first, apply the silver polish to your silver jewelry. To wipe off the the silver polish, you can use a toothbrush (just make sure it's an old one), or a simple wash cloth. Once all the polish is off, you'll be pleased to find your silver jewelry looking brand new!

Clean your silver jewelry using toothpaste
Not everyone has silver polish laying around their house, but everyone has toothpaste (or at least they should). Take a little bit of toothpaste and rub it onto the entire surface of your silver jewelry. With the toothpaste, you can also use a toothbrush, a washcloth, or anything that is gentle, to wipe it off.

Clean your silver jewelry using water, baking soda, and aluminum foil
This method of cleaning your silver jewelry is a little more complicated than the previous ones, but it is extremely effective. Use a pot and line the inside with aluminum foil (you can also use an aluminum dish). Add some water to this pot, and put it on the stove and let it boil (if you use an aluminum dish, you will have to boil the water before). Pour some baking soda, about 1/4 of a cup is all you should need, into the boiling water. Put your jewelry in the pot and turn the the stove off. Let the jewelry set in the pot for a few minutes and then drain the water out. Dry the jewelry off and it will look like it did the day you bought it.

Clean your silver jewelry using a Sunshine cloth
A Sunshine cloth is a cloth that has been chemically treated. All you have to do is rub this cloth on your silver jewelry and it should remove any dirt and leave your jewelry very shiny. You can also use a regular cotton cloth, but a Sunshine cloth removes the dirt more effectively.

Clean your silver jewelry using a sterling silver dip
Dips are great for cleaning jewelry, but they are a little dangerous, so be careful. If used improperly, the dip can ruin your silver jewelry, so be sure to read the instructions carefully. When using a sterling silver dip, dip your jewelry in and take it out immediately. Rinse the dip off with water and buff a little with a wash cloth. There are a lot of great options for cleaning silver jewelry, so if you're afraid that you will make a mistake with this, go for an easier option.

Its so much easier to just move your silver items back and forth in Silvermate liquid silver cleaner for 20 seconds, rinse it and towel dry it. Silvermate is 96% water and is so mild and there is no hand polishing involved and it leaves no residue at all. www.silvermatecompany.com It will never scratch or damage your silver: sterling or plate, gold or platinum.

Be careful is you are using the baking soda/ aluminum process on silver PLATE! It will remove the silver coating over time. If you are going to buy silver cleaner, the best silver cleaner I have used is Silvermate. Its liquid so you don't have to rub or scrub, which can cause you to polish right through your silver plate! It cleans and polishes in just a few seconds and is mild enough to just use my bare hands!

Great info, I have always been scared of silver jewelry because of the tarnishing and care that it requires.

I don't have any silver, it turns black on me. I'm strictly a gold girl. (Mother always told me never to be a cheap date.)
