How to Clean UPVC (PVC) Window Frames Easily

Viktoria Carrella
UPVC, also known as rigid PVC, is an inexpensive building material that is durable and easy to assemble. PVC is used in almost half of all construction jobs in the world. The density of the window frames can be made softer by using a plasticizer to make it more flexible for round windows, or leaving out the phthalates will keep it strong enough to hold an entire structure on its own. While UPVC window frames can dirty easily there is a way to clean them quickly.

Things you will need to clean UPVC window frames:

- Sponge
- Any PVC pipe cleaning product (sold at local hardware stores)

Step One:
Wet the cleaning sponge and wring out well. Scrub the surface of the window frame from one corner to the other and then rinse the sponge. Continue to do this after washing every corner of the window frame.

Step Two:
Apply the PVC pipe cleaner product as directed on the bottle. Scrub the PVC pipe with the cleaning sponge.

Step Three:
Rinse well with water and apply as many times as needed to remove all dirt and debris.

Step Four:
Wet the cleaning sponge again and wipe over all of the surfaces that have a discoloration due to age or weather. The sponge will help to remove the discolorations and any residue from the PVC pipe cleaner that was used in the previous step.

Step Five:
Rinse with water after washing every corner to avoid rubbing dirt back onto the clean surfaces.

PVC cleaner is easy to find at local hardware stores. There are many to choose from, some being industrial in strength. Regular household cleaners are recommended for minimal dirt and no corrosion, and always rinse off any residual cleaners to avoid damaging the surface of the UPVC. Regular household bleaching agents are good to use on white window frames, and this will not mar or damage the surface if rinsed off completely. There are also UPVC cleaners on the market that will repair scratches in the surface, as well as clean the discolorations away that are available at local hardware stores. This eco-friendly alternative to wooden window frames is easy to care for and use and the products available for cleaning are of average price. When cleaned properly and cared for on a regular basis, the life span of UPVC window frames can be as long as the life of the home they are used in.
