How to Get a Closer, Cleaner Shave

5 Steps to a Close Shave

StillWideAwake
This morning, when I stumbled out of bed, my hunch was right. Looking at my reflection, it was clear that I couldn't go another day, I needed to shave. Since shaving men's facial hair is a fact of life, I've searched for techniques that I could use to get the best shave. On my quest to find a cleaner, closer shave, I've discovered 5 easy tips:

1. Use the Right Razor

A high performing razor is an absolute essential. Select a model based on your skin type and beard length. With over-the-counter models, the more hair that you want to remove, the more blades you should have on your razor. A multi-blade model works well for most thicker beards and stubble.

The highest performing razors are those with disposable blades. They are costly, require that you change blades often, and handle differently, but they produce a closer shave. An electric razor is quicker but it does not produce the same close shave as using a traditional razor does.

2. Find a Good Shaving Cream

Using the right shaving cream can prevent razor burn and protect a man's skin from abrasions and cuts. It will soften your beard, making it easier for the razor to do its job. Choose a cream or soap shaving cream that has moisturizers, as these are better for men's skin.

3. Proper Technique

Start with making sure that the face is wet. A great time to shave is right after you've taken a shower. Shave with the grain of your beard using smooth, consistent strokes. Use shorter strokes if using a razor with disposable blade. Take your time around your jaw line and neck area. Make sure to clean your blade after every stroke.

4. Facial Rinse

Shaving is somewhat traumatic to a man's face so it's important to rinse your face in cool water to close your pores and cool your skin. Some men prefer to first use a warm towel to soothe the face. Rinsing is also beneficial to help clean away any stray facial hair and dead skin.

5. Using Aftershave

Using a good aftershave will soothe the skin and medicate any razor burns or cuts. Then, take care of any nicks and cuts with a pencil or shaving balm. A good men's facial lotion is the finishing step.

Follow these 5 steps and begin the day with a cleaner and closer shave.
