How to Make Cloth Toilet Paper from Old Clothes
Saving Money and the Environment is as Easy as Cleaning Out Your Closet!
Even if you can't sew, you can still make your own cloth toilet paper! It's very easy once you know how! I will tell you how to make your own cloth toilet paper from clothing, it won't take long at all and you'll be amazed at how inexpensive it is as well! Not only will you feel good about yourself for saving money for your family and for helping the environment, but the pride you'll feel knowing you made them yourself is a great reward as well! To get started, you will need some very basic supplies: old clothing and scissors. See, I told you this was going to be easy!
The scissors aren't that hard to acquire, either you've got them already on hand or you can get a decent but cheap pair at the local dollar store, Walmart or go a step farther and get a pair at a fabric store. For the clothes, you need not go out of your house for this! Just take a look in your closet or dresser drawers. What you're looking for is old tshirts. Cotton tshirts are very soft, the older the better! Another type of fabric to keep an eye out on is fleece. The reason why you want tshirts or fleece is because once cut, they won't fray.
If you can't find enough in your closet, just ask some friends or relatives! You could also keep your eye out for yard sales that have real cheap old clothes for sale or thrift stores. For a family who are going to use cloth exclusively, you'll probably need a good pile, about 7-10 tshirts or fleece. If you have less than that, that's fine. You can always make more later or just do an extra bit of laundry until then.
Now that you've got your old clothes ready to be put to good use, we now need to make them into cloth toilet paper! First, cut off the sleeves, the bottom hem and collar. Keep those sleeves those! Cut off the cuffs (if your clothes have them) and make a cut up one side of the sleeve. Lay the sleeve out flat and cut in half. If this is a short sleeve shirt, you now have 2 wipes! If you want them to be perfectly square, you can do a bit more tweaking with your scissors. Next up is the big part of the shirt. It's as easy as cutting up the side seams, if there is one, and cut the rest of the shirt into squares. You'll want squares roughly 5x5. You can make them larger and fold in half for more absorbancy.
Voila! That's all there is to it! These should last pretty long and by the time they wear out, you'll more than likely have more old clothes you can turn into more!
