How College is Different from High School

Todd Hicks
Are you a kid in high school who is thinking about attending a university? If you are, are you wondering how going there will be better or worse than going to a school at the secondary level? College is much different in so many ways. You will learn the differences between high school and college.

The students at the higher level are mature adults. Do you have to endure teasing, taunts, bullying or silliness at this time? If so, that is unfortunate; however, there is good news in store for you. You are not likely to have to deal with any of this mess once you become a freshman at an institution of higher learning.

The courses at this stage are probably much harder than the ones you have now. My teachers were not kidding when they said college is twice as hard as high school. You will have to study very hard and you will not have much room for error.

The professors have little tolerance for nonsense. If you think some of your teachers are stern, just wait until you advance to the next stage. Professors do not put up with you being late to class or causing a disturbance.

There is less pampering at the higher stage. Are you used to some of your teachers walking around the room a lot to see how you are doing on your work? Are you accustomed to them getting after you to do your work or put more effort into it? Well, you will not likely experience any of this in the future. You are totally on your own in college.

You will have a lot more independence here. It will be on you to make sure you do everything you need to do in order to succeed, especially if you move onto the campus dorm. You will truly see what it is like to be an adult.

The classes at this level are much more intense. You cannot expect to be a passive learner anymore. No, you will need to step up a notch and take a lot of good notes as well as ask questions periodically.

Education at this stage is not free. No, you must pay for it one way or another whether it is out of your own pocket or through a scholarship, grant or student loan. You should get started working and saving up for your college education now.

You have learned the differences between high school and college.
