How College Students Can Eliminate Final Exam Anxiety

Todd Hicks
Are you a university-going student who cracks under pressure and has a hard time staying focused enough to do well on the big tests? As a person who is attending an institution of higher education, it is imperative for you to rise to the occasion at the end of the semester. You will learn how to cope with anxiety about taking final exams as a college student.

It is necessary to maintain the proper perspective. For example, you should tell yourself, "I want to get an "A" on my finals; however, life will go on if I do not ace them."

It is vital to prepare yourself throughout the semester. The most important thing you can do to carry this out is to study your material for each class regularly.

You have the option of playing down their significance. For example, you can tell yourself, "Although it would be huge if I could ace it, I must not get worked up over it because it really is just another test with a few extra points at stake."

You cannot allow the occasion to overwhelm you when the big day arrives. Once the test starts, you should answer all of the easier questions before moving on to the tougher ones. By doing this, you will accomplish more than you will by just sitting there and panicking.

You should attempt to get a head start on being ready for any challenge. A good way to do this is to ask your family members, friends or classmates to quiz you while they look at your notes and textbooks.

You should use stress reduction techniques. These include yoga, exercising, taking deep breaths, getting plenty of sleep, laughing and taking a walk to clear your head.

Doing a simulation might help you. You can form your own exam to practice with. To get the most out of this, you should not look up any answers until you finish answering your questions.

It is a must to have confidence in yourself. The more confident you are, the more relaxed you will be.

You must use any extra test time you have to your advantage. Because I usually had at least two hours to do each final exam instead of the sixty minutes that was granted on the other tests, I took my time answering the questions while remaining calm and focused.

If you must, get professional help. As a last resort, you can see a psychiatrist.

Use these ideas to cope with your anxiety over taking final exams!
