How to Come Up with Craft Ideas for Summer Programs for Kids

Are you helping out with a local kid Summer craft program? Are the natives getting restless? Well it doesn't have to be that way, you can come up with craft ideas that will keep even the most restless kids occupied and out of trouble.

The first thing to remember is that there is more than one way to do things; it's best if you get rid of any ideas that you have to come up with the perfect idea because often with kids what you think is the perfect idea is "boring" to them. The important thing is to take into the account the ages of the kids you'll be working with so you can come up with craft ideas that are suitable to their skill levels. Doing a little research online can help! Check out what other groups are doing.

The second thing to take into account is your program's budget. Often summer programs have small budgets, so choosing craft ideas that don't require a lot of expensive supplies is usually important. Look for sales online, and at your local craft stores, if you want to teach a craft like beadworking, powwows are a treasure trove of high quality, reasonably priced bead supplies. And if you are fortunate enough to have a good budget, being careful about where you spend it may mean that you can do more crafts and thus keep your kids occupied, and happy for a longer period of time.

A final thing to keep in mind when coming up with craft ideas for Summer programs for kids is that contrary to what some might have you believe, boys and girls like to do different kinds of crafts. Boys aren't going to want to make charm bracelets for example, although if you have a mixed group you might consider beadweaving and then sewing it to a leather band with a snap. These are just masculine enough to get past the possible girly factor with boys! If you're groups are segregated then you should consider crafts for boys that deal with leather crafts, creating models and similar crafts. Girls are relatively easy when it comes to coming up with craft ideas because in most cases they will enjoy crafts that involve sewing, beading, or even weaving small friendship bracelets. When you're dealing with mixed groups keeping it on the more masculine side with some pretty colors thrown in for the girly girls is a good idea as well.

One thing that people who may not be used to being creative may overlook is that even if you look over kid craft books or websites and don't see any crafts that you like, if you think about it you may get other ideas just from looking at them. Remember you don't have to do what everyone else is doing, but it never hurts to check what everyone is doing and adding that to what you remember of your own Summer crafting years, and maybe coming up with something that is between the two.
