How to Come Up with Writing Ideas

And Write Even More for Associated Content

Amy Brantley

Over the past couple of months, I have referred several people to Associated Content. They all seem to have the same question, after looking at my content producer page, "How do you come up with so many ideas?" I'll admit, coming up with writing ideas isn't always easy. It takes work to come up with writing ideas. Sometimes writing ideas may come easily, but then you find that there isn't enough information to write a decent article. I honestly think that I spend more time coming up with writing ideas, than I do writing articles. I'm constantly thinking about what to write next. Often writing ideas come to mind as I'm falling asleep or when I'm sitting in class. Other times, I have to sit and think for quite sometimes, before a writing idea comes to mind. I hope that after reading this article, you'll be able to easily come up with writing ideas and make even more money.

Weekly Topics: You really must sign up for the Weekly Topics newsletter. I get most of my writing ideas from this weekly newsletter. This newsletter is filled with topics that people want to read about. Writing a good quality article about one of these writing ideas will ensure that your article gets read and your clout goes up. Plus, this newsletter often makes you think of even more writing ideas, so sign up today.

What Do You Do? Do you read? Do you watch movies? Do you have an interesting job? Do you have any interesting hobbies? Are you a college student? I could go on and on, but the point here is, you will find many writing ideas when you stop to think about what you know. I'm a college student and have written several articles on topics that I felt would be useful to future college students. You may think that what you do is boring, but people love to read about what others do. People are also interested in learning news things, such as hobbies. Come up with several writing ideas and share your information with the world.

Search the Associated Content Library: When short on writing ideas, it always helps to search the Associated Content library. I often find several interesting articles, in the library, that make me think of my own writing ideas. Choose a category you are interested in and look at what's out there, then sit down and come up with your own writing ideas.

Most Popular Searches: You want to choose writing ideas that will attract attention from readers. One of the best ways to choose these writing ideas is to go to search engines and see what the most popular searches are. For example, you can go to MSN.com, and towards the bottom of the page, you will find a section called Popular Searches. Another good site is, Yahoo's Buzz; at this website you can find popular searches for different categories.

Top Rated Content: On the main page at Associated Content, you will find a section that has the Top Rated content. I find it helpful to look at this section once a day. Sometimes I can come up with great writing ideas that either compliment one of the top rated articles or writing ideas that contradict the article. Either way, it's a great way to come up with more writing ideas.

TV: We all watch TV, right? Whether it's the news or a favorite show, there are writing ideas to be found on TV. For example, you may be watching one of your favorite cooking shows and come up with a great recipe of your own. Why not share that recipe, explaining how you came up with it. Then another writing idea would be to write a review of that show. Two writing ideas for the price of one; you can't beat that.

Internet: Other than popular search topics, you will find writing ideas simply by doing searches for things you need in your everyday life. You may be searching for the symptoms of a disease a family member has just been diagnosed with and bam it hits you, "I could write an article on this." This would be a great writing idea because you could share your experience and the information with other people.

Read A LOT: Read magazines, newspapers, blogs, EVERYTHING. You will then be bombarded with writing ideas. You may be reading a book by your favorite author and then come up with a writing idea about the author, such as a short biography or an article telling people why they should read that author's novels. As for newspapers, you might get a writing idea about how people could lower the money they spend on gas.

Tell People What You've Learned: Great writing ideas come from learning new things. You may learn about a subject in class that is really interested and would make a great article. You may have learned about a new way to prevent cancer. People are interested in learning new things; just like you are.

Be Prepared: The most important thing about new writing ideas is to be prepared for them. While you're sitting in a waiting room, you may come up with several writing ideas. You need to have a notepad and a pen ready, because if you don't you may forget those ideas before you get home. I have come up with several writing ideas while waiting for my oil to be changed, while I was in the waiting room at the vet's office, and even while I've been waiting on my English class to start. When I haven't been prepared, I've often forgot great writing ideas. Don't let this happen to you.

I hope these tips will help you to come up with more writing ideas. We all get writer's block, you just have to keep going and go searching for those writing ideas. Good luck.

This article is a little repetitive. You say "writing ideas" a number of times so your article doesn't flow very well when reading. I understand the point of your article but I'm just giving you a little constructive criticism. If you write your article and edit it to the best of your abilities, chances are you will get more viewers who add you to their favorites. Little things can sometimes mean big problems. Even so, great ideas in this article.

Exactly, Judith. It really does pay off to check those lists. Sometimes you'll find topics you are very passionate about, especially news topics.

Thank you for telling us where to look for popular searches. I think that's the best advice of all. If you read through a list of things people are looking for, you're bound to come across several topics that you know about - probably stuff people tend to come to you for info on anyway.

    Thanks Amy!
