How to Comfort a Dog Afraid of Thunder

Thunder can be scary - not only for you, but for your pooch, too. You know you're safe in doors during a storm, but your dog doesn't have a clue. You know what I'm talking about: a big, noisy thunder clap, you're warm and comfortable inside, but then your dog starts shivering, whining, and flat out panicking. But why?

Some dogs just don't like sudden sound of thunder. Other dogs don't like anything about storms, period. You don't want your pup to be afraid, though. Right? Well, here's what you can do.

1.PLAY WITH YOUR POOCH. One of the best ways to help your dog through a storm is to play. Ask your mom or dad to tell you when a storm is coming. When they tell you a big one is on the way, get out a tennis ball, or your pups favorite toy, and have some fun. You can also give your dog something to chew (no, not Dad's slippers), or turn on the TV or radio. These things will help drown-out the noise of the storm.

2.PET YOUR POOCH. When you're afraid, you probably like the comfort of your parents or older brothers and sisters. Well, when your dogs afraid, they like the comfort of you. Just pet your pup and say, "It'll be okay." They like it, and it makes them feel safe.

3.LET THEM HIDE. Have you ever been scared at night? Did you pull the covers over your head? Well, dogs are the same way with storms. When your dog is afraid, make sure there's a hiding place they can go to-under a table, in the bathroom, or behind a chair. Don't force your pooch to hide, and don't bother them after they do. No matter what, don't shut them in anywhere. You wouldn't like it if you were scared and locked-up, would you?

4.TAKE THEM TO THUNDER SCHOOL. If your parents will let you, buy a thunderstorm CD at the mall, or on the Internet at www.f7sound.com/dog. When you get home, play the CD quietly so your dog can hear it. The fake thunder sounds may not fool your pooch. If they do, play the CD a little louder each day while your pup is eating or playing. Soon, your dog won't be afraid anymore.

Don't get upset if you can't fix your dog's fear. Sometimes, like you and me, dogs are just scared. Sometimes there's nothing you can do. But, it's always nice to try, and your dog will love you for it-even if they're still scared of thunder.

Thanks for the tips! Our little Chihuahua is terrified of the huge storms down here in North Carolina. Maybe we can get him to calm down a bit by following your advice!
