How to Use Comments on Blogs to Gain Traffic

Dawn Conklin
Do you leave comments on other people's blogs or articles to try to get more traffic? This can be a very good way to get traffic if done correctly. If not done correctly, you will be hurting your own image and you could be hurting the other person's blog image. There is a proper way to do this and it can be rewarding.

I have 6 blogs that I maintain and I get a lot of spam comments. By spam comments I mean people dropping in leaving a quick "nice blog" comment with a link back to their site. Though "nice blog" looks like a compliment; if that is all that is written and they throw a link in there, chances are they really were just commenting to get their link on the blog. This makes them look bad as people look at them as a spammer and it could hurt my blog if a lot of people are leaving these kind of comments. To a search engine it could make my blog look like a spam blog. Bloggers enjoy compliments but you need to let us know why our blog was nice. When you say "nice blog" it looks to me that you really did not read any of my blog posts but you just want to drop your link in there. We also get outright obvious spammers. People coming to our blogs and leaving a comment like "check out our work at home site at [link]." Nobody wants to click on that website because people look at you as a spammer. A lot of blog owners have enabled comment moderation now, due to spam. Your spam comment will not make it to the blog if the moderation is on. The blog owner must approve all comments before they are visible.

As a rule you should only comment on blog posts or articles that you can either contribute information to or that you found interesting or useful. When I leave a comment it is to let the writer know I was there and found their writing interesting. For example; if I visit somebody's blog and they wrote a post about a work at home opportunity, if I have tried that opportunity and liked it, I will comment on it stating how it really does work like the blog owner claims. If I haven't tried it but it sounds interesting, I may leave a comment asking them a question about it. I will not leave a comment on any post that I do not find interesting. This is a bigger compliment to the blog owner as it shows them that you took the time to read their blog post and that you really were interested in it. If you read the article or blog but disagree with the person, you can let them know you disagree. Do not be outright rude but if you explain nicely why you disagree at least it shows them that you read it and are not just link dropping. You should not leave your link in the comment. When you leave a comment people are able to click on your name which will then take them directly to your website.

As long as you only give thoughtful comments on blog posts or articles showing that you really read the content, you will gain a lot of free traffic from leaving comments. People that are reading the blog and all of it's comments will see that you really have something worth saying. When people see this, they are more likely to click on your website. If they see that you are just leaving a link, it shows that you are only trying to get traffic but do not have much to offer and they will not visit your website.

There are a lot of new Internet marketers out there everyday without the proper knowledge on how to get traffic. If you are new to it, you probably do not realize how you hurt your own image and you may not even realize that you are spamming people. I wrote this article on my experience with my own blogs and to help new marketers learn the proper way to leave comments. This is the proper way to leave a comment on anybody's blog, article, website or any place on the web that allows you to leave comments.

I love your info on posting comments to blogs. I agree that "nice blog" is definitely spamming if that is all you have to say. I see "nice lens" on Squidoo lenses all the time, and I think "Really? Is that all you have to say?" It makes the person leaving the comment look bad. You will not get visitors to your blog with such trivial comments.
