How to Get Common Car Insurance Discounts

Evan Nash
Car insurance can be very expensive on a term-to-term basis, but it could cost you even more if you break the law and drive with no coverage at all. It is definitely a bad idea to get behind the wheel without car insurance, but how do you afford the coverage in the first place? It is not easy sometimes to pay for your car insurance, but it is easier when you can get some good discounts to soften the blow. Below is several of the most popular car insurance discounts across car insurance companies and how you can get them.
  • Have an alarm on your vehicle. Car insurance policies are commonly thought of to protect you when you have a car accident, but another part of the policy can also protect you when your car is stolen or damaged. The presence of a car alarm will deter these activities and you should inform your car insurance company when you apply for insurance of the presence of your alarm. This is usually done by checking a box when applying online or just telling the agent in person.
  • Be a college graduate. There is no easy way to get this discount unless you are honored by some college for some great deed you performed. Getting a degree will get you discounts in some walks of life and not in others, but car insurance will usually give you one. Again, informing your agent or clicking a box should get this done for you.
  • Get renters insurance or homeowners insurance from the same company. This could also be true of life insurance in some instances. Companies will give you discounts for bringing all of your policies over as it makes them a stable company and gives you more money off of your coverage. This is a discount that can hardly be missed when you are enrolling in coverage.
While these may be the three most common discounts on car insurance it is good to know that the best discount is being a good driver. Even if your car insurance company doesn't advertise a "good driver" discount it will be reflected in your car insurance quote. The better driver you are the lower your quote will be and for good reason, you save the insurance company money.

Avoiding speeding tickets, car accidents and protecting your car will make you very attractive to any insurance company. Taking pride in your driving and your vehicle will pay off for you down the road with car insurance.
