Many new parents assume that because their babies are newborns and cannot really respond in kind, that it's not that important to talk to their newborn all the time. However, the way that babies learn how to talk is by hearing their parents and others talk to them, so if you don't talk to your newborn, you may be slowing down his ability to learn to talk. Some examples of things you can do are to read your newborn children's stories, or nursery rhymes, even singing to your newborn counts.
You can also talk to your baby about what you are working on, even if it is something as simple as making a bed, or doing dishes. This will help your newborn to understand how to do things later on when he is older. You can also tell your newborn what things are called around your home. Again, it may seem as if he is too young to understand, but baby's brains are sharper than we give them credit for, and by doing this you are ensuring he will learn to communicate sooner than a newborn whose parents don't do this. Talking to your baby about familiar objects and phrases builds a foundation for the future for him when it comes to communcating.
You may find that you feel a little silly when you first start, but it is well worth it when your child begins repeating words at a younger age because you took the time. If you don't talk to your child from birth, you may discover that he is slower to learn to talk, and this could even lead to learning disabilities later on in life. So, make sure you talk to your newborn from the day he is born and for the rest of his childhood as this will ensure a smarter child with a brighter future.
