How to Communicate Without Using a Computer

Pennya
There are many ways to keep in touch that are far more thoughtful and personal then email. Sometimes we are so caught up in technology we forget there are other ways to communicate. Before computers, we would use the phone to talk to those we loved. Before the phone, we used letters and notes sent through the mail. Many people have abandoned these methods when we should be embracing them.

There are many benefits to making a phone call first you get to hear the person's voice which will give you a clue on how they are feeling. This will allow you to have a conversation with them with out any distractions. Turn off the television and radio when you are on the phone so that you can give them your undivided attention. If you start feeling a lull in the conversation, you can bring up things that are happening in your life or ask them more about what they have been up too. Try not to let the phone call last longer then it has to since you do not want to take up to much of their time. If you are thinking of calling someone, make sure you have at least an hour set aside so you do not have to rush him or her off the phone.

There are also benefits of writing a letter. You can organize your thoughts and control the dialog in the letter. Yes, you could write the same thing and send it through an e-mail but if you write out the letter yourself, it will have added personal value. You can send pictures or some home made cookies along with a note to lift a friends spirits. If you know what it is like to pick up your mail and only have a bunch of junk and bills, you can understand the joys of receiving unexpected mail. Make sure you include your return address and phone number in case they want to get a hold of you to respond to your thoughts. You are never too young to start communicating with others in a thoughtful and meaningful way.

Of course, you can still use your computer to communicate with friends and family. Sometimes it is nice to use other forms of communication to show them that we love them. Make a list of all the people you would like to get a hold of this month and start thinking of ways you would want to communicate with them.

Good article! I'm a hallmark-addict and I LOVE sending letters. It's so much better than spending all your time in email and friend-sites like MySpace.
