How to Compare Car Insurance Options

Comparing car insurance options and rates from at least three different auto insurance providers can help you find a package that best meets your needs and also fits within your budget. Car insurance providers are competing for your business, so it can pay to shop around. You do need to ask some important questions during your search process, and will need some time to review the contract terms in detail before you proceed with the agreement.

Use these tips when comparing car insurance options and packages:

1. Review your state's auto liability requirements. Minimum liability coverage requirements vary significantly from state to state, so it's important to learn what guidelines are in place for your specific location. Some car insurance providers post this information right on their website, but you can also check with your state's Department of Transportation for an accurate figure.

2. Know what you want. Most car insurance providers will try to sell you the maximum coverage possible. This does help to provide more protection, but can also cost you much more than anticipated. Make sure you understand the different types of coverage available - liability, collision, comprehensive and extended coverage - and what exactly each of these coverage types offer.

3. Compare deductibles and limitations. Remember that the higher the deductible, the lower your premium will be. Your deductible is the amount you are going to pay out of pocket in the event of an accident. Any expenses incurred higher than the deductible will be covered by the insurance provider. If you have been offered a very low premium from a particular insurance company, make sure you compare the deductible and limitations on the policy to ensure you can realistically afford any out-of-pocket expenses.

4. Ask about insurance discounts. You may be eligible for insurance discounts from some insurance providers and not from others. Ask about good driver discounts, discounts for carrying other types of insurance from the same provider and loyalty discounts. Some companies will offer a better rate based on various discount programs.

5. Learn about the claims-filing process. If you do get into an accident, make sure you understand what the claims-filing process entails. Who would you need to get in touch with and what forms would you need to fill out? How long does it usually take to file a claim? When comparing car insurance options, make sure you are choosing a company that has a solid track record of delivering good customer service, and that you don't end up waiting several months to receive compensation from a claim.
