Look to see if the product provides a firewall from outside programs while on the Internet. It will normally state right on the product's box or website if it does contain a firewall. A firewall allows the user to adjust the settings of the computer, allowing only specific sites access to the computer. Most spyware programs will have this feature, however, there are those that just remove the problems and don't protect against them.
Check to see if there is a password protection feature on the spyware software. Having a password protection safeguard will keep out third party malware programs which don't have the password to access your computer. This will immensely reduce the risk of spyware infecting your computer. Typically if a program or file doesn't have your password you will be prompted about the file and if it is okay that the Internet file accesses your computer. This will allow you to run the online programs you want, while killing the potential threats.
Determine of the spyware software has real-time protection features. Real time spyware software will constantly be on the look out for potential malware attempting to install itself onto the computer. This feature will help prevent the unwanted malware and spyware from infesting the hard drive of the computer.
Purchase a product that comes with support. Some products come with subscriptions that will update the spyware software. This is important because spyware and malware will evolve to get around a firewall, which is why spyware removal software should evolve as well, in order to stay ahead of the game.
Scheduled scans are also an important feature to have on a spyware removal software. A scheduled scan is a complete system scan which searches for spyware and other malicious actives on the computer. These scans can be scheduled for any time of the time (typically when the computer is not normally in use so it doesn't interfere with your browsing schedule). These scans will usually be able to pick up and find spyware on the system that the other program defenses missed.
