How to Compost Your Halloween Pumpkin

Mary Wensing Dvorachek
First of all you will need your pumpkin or pumpkins that you either grew or purchased. After you have made the lid for your pumpkin you will take your the seeds and all the pulp that comes with the seeds. We like to take and separate the seeds. Then wash the pumpkin seeds, let drain, then put on a cookie sheet with a small amount of vegetable oil and bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 40 minutes. Then add salt. These are great to eat alone or you can make up little snack packs and add raisins, nuts and other dried fruits. Store in air tight containers.

Then you will want to take and pulp and other pieces you have cut from the pumpkin and put them on a pile of leaves, you can add vegetable skins, or pumpkin leaves and vines. I take can cut up the vines, and make the pieces small. You can also either build your compost in a large rubbermaid garbage can. Or take a few boards and some chicken wire and make a square space at the corner of your garden, or next to the garage, or where ever it is more suitable for you to have the compost pile. Adding egg shells, coffee grounds, and any other food products that are thrown out will make excellent compost.

If you decide to use the seeds in your compost pile they have a tendency to grow come spring. So what I like to do is cut the seeds up. This will stop them from growing. I also like to layer, the pulp, leaves, veggies, newspaper, leaves, coffee grounds.

After Halloween you will want to add your pumpkins to the compost pile. At times the pumpkin if left in more of a mass the have a tendency to mold. So I like to smash them up till the are small pieces and then mix my compost.

Composting your pumpkins is great for the environment plus it gives you great compost for your garden and flowers for the following year. Why not give it a try.
