How Comprehensive Coverage Protects Your Car

Understanding Your Insurance Coverage

Rissa Watkins
Comprehensive coverage covers your car from several kinds of claims. Coverages include theft of the car itself or theft of parts off the car, damage from wind, fire, hail, falling objects, and vandalism. Basically, comprehensive coverage will repair or replace your car for anything other than a collision, unless that collision is with an animal.

Comprehensive coverage is used when your car is hit by a hit and run driver. Comprehensive also covers your car if your windshield needs to be replaced.

Most comprehensive coverage car insurance policies have a deductible. This deductible amount is subtracted from the total loss amount that is reimbursed by your insurance company. For example, if a car worth $6,000 with a $500 deductible is hit and totaled while parked, the insurance company will pay $5,500 to replace the vehicle. Some insurance policies' comprehensive coverage includes a zero deductible for windshield repair or replacement.

There are comprehensive coverages that you might be unaware exist. If an animal gets into your car and trashes your seats, it should be covered. Tornado damage to your vehicle should be covered as well, which is explained in depth in this article about tornado insurance claims.

Comprehensive claims are one of the rating factors insurance companies consider when quoting your premium. Insurance premiums can go up if there are too many comprehensive claims. Some insurance companies consider roadside service a comprehensive claim. Ask your insurance agent before adding this coverage to your policy, because it might be cheaper to use a third party roadside company.

Comprehensive coverage is a must when living in a high crime neighborhood, especially if you are worried about your car being stolen. Never leave valuables in your car. Comprehensive coverage will not cover personal items left in the vehicle. However, personal items attached to the car, like a cell phone plugged into a charger, should be covered under your comprehensive insurance coverage. Talk to your insurance agent to find out more.
