How to Make Your Computer Faster

How to disable last access update for faster browsing when going through folders on your computer

Have you even been searching folder after folder trying to get to a certain directory only to find that every folder you open delays before it shows you it's content? Well this is because the computer is constantly updating the time stamp which serves as keeping track of month, day, year, and or time. This is what causes that lag when opening up folders, so I thought I would show you a way to stop your computer from doing this to speed up browsing through folders on your computer. Before you do anything be sure to backup your registry or create a system restore point just in case you do something wrong that way you can restore it back to it's original settings. Follow these steps closely as messing with the wrong registries files and changing them can have deadly consequences to your computer and it's behavior.

1.)First, click on start and then click on run

2.)Next, type regedit in the box and click ok

3.)Now a new window will appear so from here expand the following directories until you get to the last on which you are to click on:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetControlFileSys

4.)After you have clicked on the FileSys on the right side of the window is a box with difference text and variables. If there isn't a text called NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate then right click on a blank area in that window and select DWORD value and create a new DWORD value called NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate

5.)Now right click on NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate and select modify changing it's value to 1 then click ok and your finished

Changing this setting will stop the time stamp from updating the time, date, ect and will allow you to browse through folders more quickly. I suggest you do this registry mod because the time stamp is basically useless when trying to see when you accessed a folder so it's all a matter of preference. Do you want faster speeds when going though folders or a time stamp that monitors when you last accessed a folder(I don't really ever see this feature helping you other then obviously helping you remember when you last accessed a file or folder)? Just remember modifying the registry is a dangerous task and just be sure that you have followed the instructions carefully or that you have researched it before doing so.
