How to Conceive a Boy

Increase Your Chances for Conceiving a Baby Boy

Kathy Wiehl
Do you have visions of snakes, snails and puppy dog tails? Dreaming of a nursery painted in blue, father son fishing trips, cub scouts and dirt bikes in the future? Many couples long for a little boy for many reasons. Some have a daughter and want to experience raising a boy. Whatever your reason, here are a few tips to help you increase your chances of having a son. Keep in mind, that no method is 100% correct. Some families seemingly don't have the ability to produce boys.

Timing
Timing is everything when it comes to increasing your odds of conceiving a boy. We all know that there are two types of sperm- "boy" sperm that contain an X and a Y chromosome, and "girl" sperm that contain XX chromosome. The boy sperm swim fast, but are a little weaker and don't survive very long in the acidic environment in the vaginal tract. This is why timing is important. In order to allow the male sperm to get to the egg, you need to time sexual intercourse so that it occurs no more than 24 hours prior to ovulation. Having intercourse earlier than that will result in the male sperm being eliminated before the egg is released. Since the male sperm swim faster they will beat the female sperm to the egg if you get the timing right.

You have a few options for determining the exact day of ovulation. Charting cervical mucous and basal body temperature are good ways of tracking your cycle and knowing when ovulation is likely to occur. You can also buy ovulation predictor kits to make the process a bit easier.

Sexual Position
It is believed that the "doggy style" position enables the sperm to be deposited closer to the cervix. This allows the male sperm to get to the egg quicker than any other position.

Have an Orgasm
Having an orgasm releases substances that cause the vaginal tract to be more alkaline, which is favorable for male sperm. Also, the contractions which accompany an orgasm help to move the sperm into the cervix faster.

Advice for Men
When trying to conceive a boy, it's best to drink a caffeinated drink shortly before sex. This will give the male sperm a boost.

Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis
If you want to be 100% sure that the child you conceive is a boy, then you may opt for a medical procedure called Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD). PGD costs about $20,000 and some clinic only offer this service in order to prevent genetic disorders.
