Pros:
Because of the network you create, it is very easy to transfer recordings to your computer to save or edit.
You are able to watch your recorded shows both on the TV and over the Internet with a fast connection.
You can access your DVR remotely to schedule recordings or delete pending programs.
You can download content from the Internet directly to your DVR.
Cons:
Privacy. Because you are connected to the Internet, you may be more open to who can see your programming choices.
If you have smart neighbors, the may piggyback off your DVR and watch your shows for free while bogging down your Internet speed.
Many DVR's are not compatible with some of the Pro's listed, TiVo is but you should double check before buying one or signing a contract if you are really interested in this.
There are many different types of recording devices. Some you own, some you rent from your provider and the plans and pricing vary for each. Be sure to check out what a particular DVR can do and what it is limited to before you sign up. For the long run, it may be worth it to purchase a DVR to have more flexibility, but be aware of the potential increase in plan pricing.
DVR's provide a great amount of flexibility to users and through the use of the Internet; you can reap even more benefits.
