This is a simple step that involves implementing the use of barrels and other appropriate containers to catch rain water that occurs naturally in your area. This water, in turn, can be used to clean with, water outdoor and indoor plants, clean vehicles, and if you use a clean rain water barreling technique, it can even be used to drink! States that are known to receive a lot of rain, like Florida, often have residents that engage in this type of activity.

6. Be certain to check all faucets on the inside of the home, as well as the outside of the home regularly for leaks. If you discover that you have a faulty faucet, be sure to replace it. Depending on the amount of water leaking from the faucet, you could use several gallons of water monthly through this type of waste.

7. When washing clothes in the home, be sure to only wash full loads. You should place the washer on the "Quick Wash" or the "Energy Efficient" setting. This will give the clothes a good cleaning, but will require less time and less water.

8. Encourage individuals in the home to use cups and plates composed of environmentally friendly recycled materials that can be disposed of. This will require less water usage for washing dishes at the end of the day.

9. If you implement the use of an outdoor hose for watering, be sure to use a nozzle that turns off the flow of water when it is not in use.
